The 2016 International Centre for Women Playwrights 50/50 Applause Awards:

Celebrating gender parity on five continents for our 5th anniversary!

The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP)  is thrilled to report that a record-breaking number of recipients will receive the 2016 50/50 Applause Awards, which recognizes theatres that produced 50% or more women playwrights in their 2015/16 season of shows. ICWP defines 50/50 by the number of qualifying performances in a theatre’s season. This allows a concrete measurement of the resources being devoted to women playwrights.

For the awards’ 5th anniversary, ICWP recognized 107 recipients in ten countries on five continents. The list includes theatres in Australia, Canada, England, Italy, Kenya, the Philippines, Scotland, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United States. Approximately 32% of the theatres are repeat recipients, demonstrating gender parity in two or more seasons. Recipients range from community and college theatres to internationally renowned theatres. Meet some of the theatres in the ICWP celebration video. http://www.womenplaywrights.org/50-50-awards-video-2016

For several years, the international performing arts industry has been scrutinized for its underrepresentation of women playwrights as well as women in leadership positions in theatre. According to the League of Professional Theatre Women’s (LPTW) 2015 study “Women Count: Women Hired Off-Broadway 2010-2015”, women playwrights were produced 28%-36% of the time. Among ten Australian theatres, 39% of original and adapted works were by women (The National Voice 2106, Australian Writers Guild). The UK’s Purple Seven study “Gender in Theatre” of 2012-2015 seasons reported 28% of playwrights were female.

Though these numbers are higher than they have been in the past, women playwrights are still not receiving their due, and there are many potential reasons. The LPTW study points out that new works by women are more likely to be produced today than those by women in the past, although there are many classic women playwrights. The AWG cites that commissioned adaptations are where women are making the least amount of headway.

A full list of the qualifying seasons by our 50/50 recipients can be found on our website. http://womenplaywrights.org/50-50-awards-2016 In addition, theatres researching plays by contemporary female playwrights can look at the Kilroys List, the 49 List, the New Play Exchange, and Treepress.com.

ICWP started in 1988 with a mission to support women playwrights worldwide and bring attention to their work. The ICWP 50/50 Applause Awards were founded in 2012 to increase awareness and applaud theatres that produced a season with an equal or greater number of plays written by female playwrights. The 2015 International Centre for Women Playwrights 50/50 Applause Awards: International and more consistent support for women playwrights swells in theaters!

The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) is delighted to report the increasingly consistent and diverse recipients for this year’s 50/50 Applause Awards, which sets out to recognize theatres that produced 50% or more women playwrights in their season of shows.  ICWP defines 50/50 by the number of qualifying performances in a theater’s season. This allows us to measure what percentage of resources is being devoted to women playwrights.

This year, we are pleased to be honoring 60 recipients, representing nine countries. The list includes theatres in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Scotland, Sweden and the United States. Our recipients range from small or new theaters to well-established larger theaters. We are thrilled that one third of the list are repeat recipients who have demonstrated gender parity in two or more seasons, indicating an increased awareness and commitment to women playwrights from the larger theater community.  Meet some of the theaters in our multi-lingual video.  http://www.womenplaywrights.org/2015-award-video

While these theaters are serving as role models, ICWP recognizes that the average of productions of women playwrights internationally continues to remain under 25%. The United States’ 2015 The Count, measuring productions nationwide 2011-2014, found that women playwrights were being produced 22% (up from the 2009 Sands report at 18%). In Canada, The Equity in Theatre (EIT) report (2015), however, showed a decrease in productions by women playwrights from 29% for the season of 2010/11 (PACT report) to 22% for the season of 2013/14.

There is also a disparity in the size of theaters and stages that women playwrights are given in comparison to their male counterparts. This directly affects the ticket price and, therefore, the potential income for the playwright. According to the EIT, the largest theaters in Canada produce men 70% while women’s work is produced 19.5%. The UK’s report “Still Looking Through A Glass Ceiling?” found that “…on average, new plays by women are performed in theatres that are 24% smaller than those which present new work by men, while the ticket price is 23% lower.” (British Theatre Consortium in collaboration with the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre, 2015)

Theaters that are looking for plays by women can find the seasons of our recipients listed on our website. Other resources are The Kilroys List, The New Play Exchange and Treepress.

ICWP started in 1988 with a mission to support women playwrights worldwide and bring attention to their work. The 2014 International Centre for Women Playwrights 50/50 Applause Awards: Thunderous “Applause” to international theatre companies producing women playwrights!

The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) is thrilled to report the extraordinary level of international support that is represented by the recipients for this year’s 50/50 Applause Awards, which sets out to recognize theatres that produced 50% or more women playwrights in their season of shows.  In the spring, for the first time in the history of the awards, ICWP invited the public to nominate theatres that had produced the work of women playwrights throughout the world.

To our great delight, we are proud to announce 67 recipients from nine countries for the 2014 awards. The list includes theatres in Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the United States. There are fourteen repeat recipients who have demonstrated gender parity in more than one season.  Meet some of the theaters in our multi-lingual video. http://www.womenplaywrights.org/award-video

Despite this encouraging news, ICWP recognizes there is a long way to go to 50/50 status. The Australian Council for Arts 2012 “Women in Theatre” report cites that 21% of the productions between 2001-2011 were written by women. Playwright Lynn Nottage wrote, “…not a single new Broadway play this season was written by a woman or person of color, and of the 47 bookwriters/composers and lyricists represented on Broadway, only six of them were women” (“Women Are Missing From TONY’s and Broadway”, New York Times, 6/6/14). Likewise, there were no new plays or musicals written by women produced on London’s West End in the 2013-2014 season. The Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative (LAFPI) reports that 16% of the 2013-2014 shows produced in Southern California were by women playwrights.

ICWP President Karen Jeynes of South Africa says It is a sad truth that often women are not as easily able to access platforms as men are, and there are so many stories which go untold. This award is a fantastic way to acknowledge those who are producing women's work, and encourage those who aren't to think about whether there are more ways to include women writers in their line up.”

ICWP started in 1988 with a mission to support women playwrights worldwide and bring attention to their work. The 50/50 Applause Awards are now an annual event for ICWP, with nominations being stringently checked by a strong volunteer committee.  More information about the awards can be found at: http://www.womenplaywrights.org/award

The 2013 International Centre for Women Playwrights 50/50 Applause Awards:
ICWP “applauds” theatre companies for producing women playwrights.

Standing ovation! The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) is delighted with the increased number of recipients for this year’s 50/50 Applause Awards, which sets out to recognize theatres which produce 50% or more women playwrights in their season of shows.  In the spring, members of ICWP nominated theatres that were producing the work of women playwrights throughout the world.

This year there are 29 recipients, nearly 6 times as many as our inaugural awards in 2012. The list includes theatres in the United States, India, Norway, Italy, and Canada. There are two repeat recipients: Playwrights Horizons in New York and Symmetry Theatre in California.  President of ICWP, Dr. Jennifer Munday, says, “We are delighted with the response from both theatres and members who see this award as a demonstration of their commitment to women’s writing.”

Even though the indications are promising, ICWP recognizes there is a long way to go to 50/50 status. A study report from the Gender Equity Task Force in Chicago found that “Plays written by women (either one woman or a group of all women) constituted 18.8% of plays produced in Chicago….roughly in line with recent statistics from New York theaters and from Theatre Communications Group member theatres, which found that between 17% and 20% of plays produced by those groups are written by women.” (Chicago Storefront Summit, March 22, 2010) In two studies on the 2012-2013 season, Washington DC productions showed a slight uptick to 21% (DC Theater: A Demographic Analysis, 2013) and women playwrights were faring even better in Canada with 23%. (Playwrights Guild of Canada, 2013).
