Writing class on zoom - finish your draft!!!

19 Sep 2022 7:00 PM | Ali MacLean

Hello, everyone!

Back by popular demand, I am teaching my writing class again this fall. I'm offering this one and perhaps a workshop, then I most likely won't be teaching for a stretch. So jump on the Gravy Train!

The course will be taught on Zoom for 5 weeks, focusing on strengthening the engine of your  storyline and creating compelling characters that are both grounded and original.

If you are a veteran writer needing to be held accountable, a new writer wanting to learn the nuts and bolts, or an actor looking to create a starring vehicle, the tools and prompts from class will help while working on your current project, or to give you a jumpstart on the next one. If you are like - "I'm good. Why is she sending me this?" sometimes a guy knows a guy...so pass it on to someone you know who might be interested.

My goal is to help you write a script that A) you are passionate about (I don't believe in trying to guess the trends) and B) is the best version of your story - not what your agent thinks you should write, or what the Artistic Directors and studios are mandating this month, but what moves YOU. For that will be your best work.

By the end of class you will be moving towards a first draft.

Writing Your Story

Take your script or solo show to the next level with award-winning playwright and David Sedaris Humor Writing Prize winner, Ali MacLean. Each week will consist of writing exercises, script analysis, providing peers with constructive criticism, and receiving feedback on weekly pages to help with revisions. Come with an idea and shape the bones of a first draft, or bring a story you have started and help get it across the finish line.

Every Monday, September 19th-October 17th on ZOOM
7-10 pm PST, online

$350 - pay in full upfront, or $50 deposit and pay balance on 1st day of class. Discount for those who qualify under the ADA.

Here are some comments from former students:

"I LOVE ALI AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND WORKING WITH HER. SHE IS INSIGHTFUL, SERIOUSLY FUNNY AND OFFERS REAL CLARITY AND GUIDANCE. SHE GAVE ME A FRESH SET OF EYES FOR MY SCRIPT AND REALLY PULLED ME OUT OF THE WEEDS ON THE DIRECTION I NEEDED TO GO IN. SHE'LL PULL YOU OUT OF WHEREVER YOU ARE STUCK AND YOU'LL HAVE REAL FUN DOING IT."

"CLASS STRUCK A PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN LESSONS, WRITING PROMPTS, AND FEEDBACK. SOME OF THE PROMPTS SPURRED IDEAS FOR NEW PLAYS...PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN ALI TEACHES AGAIN!"

"ALI'S CLASS HAS TAUGHT ME SO MANY INVALUABLE WRITING SKILLS AND EXERCISES THAT HELPED ME SO MUCH WITH MY SPECIFIC ISSUES AS A WRITER AND AS A PERSON. ALI'S INCREDIBLE SHORT EXERCISES HAVE NOT ONLY RE-INSPIRED ME...BUT MADE ME REALIZE HOW LITTLE TIME IT TAKES TO WRITE SOMETHING GREAT. "

"ALI MADE WRITING EXCITING. IT WAS AN AMAZING JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY. I ENJOYED SHOWING UP TO CLASS EVERY WEEK BECAUSE ALI MADE THE CLASS SUCH A POSITIVE, SAFE, PLACE TO CONNECT AND CREATE. I CANNOT WAIT TO TAKE HER CLASS AGAIN!.

"THE CLASS IS UNIQUE IN COMPARISON TO OTHER CLASSES THAT OFFER THE SAME KIND OF THING. ALI HAS SUCH A CAPTIVATING WAY OF EXPLAINING WHAT TRULY MAKES GOOD WRITING, WHILE ALLOWING FOR SO MUCH FREEDOM. SHE'S ALSO A REALLY FUN PERSON TO HANG OUT WITH FOR THREE HOURS..."
