Biography
Paula Cizmar is an award-winning playwright and librettist; her plays have been produced off-Broadway, in London, in Europe, and in regional theatres from Maine to California including Portland Stage, CalRep, San Diego Rep, LaMaMa, The Jungle Theatre, The American Place Theatre, Playwrights Arena, and the Women’s Project. Plays include: ANTIGONE X, THE CHISERA, BONE DRY, THE DEATH OF A MINER, STILL LIFE WITH PARROT & MONKEY, CANDY & SHELLEY GO TO THE DESERT, GHOST DANCE ON MULHOLLAND, and STREET STORIES. She is one of the authors of the internationally acclaimed documentary theatre piece, SEVEN. Translated into over 20 languages, the play has been produced in 30+ countries around the world, including in Sweden, Nigeria, Argentina, Japan, Jordan, India, Afghanistan, Lithuania, and multiple countries in The Balkans. The play explores the risky work of women activists struggling to create changes in human rights policies around the globe. Cizmar’s honors include two NEA grants, a Drama-Logue Award, a Special Commendation from the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, a Rockefeller residency at Bellagio, Italy, and a TCG/Mellon Foundation On the Road Grant. Her latest works include THE LAST NIGHTS OF SCHEHERAZADE, STRAWBERRY, and WATER RITES, as well as several adaptations: ALONG THE RIVER, ALMOST WINTER (Winter's Tale), GOAT SPRINGS ETERNAL (Fuenteovejuna), and ANONYMOUS, ME (Much Ado about Nothing). She writes musical theatre and opera, and with composer Guang Yang she wrote the opera THE NIGHT FLIGHT OF MINERVA'S OWL which won the international new opera competition called Music That Matters at Pittsburgh Festival Opera. Also with Yang, she wrote INVISIBLE, produced as part of LA Opera’s Eurydice Found Festival, plus a new short opera, FIRECRACKERS, for White Snake Opera Projects, which was produced in Boston. She is a professor of playwriting in the School of Dramatic Arts at USC and the co-director of the Institute for Theatre and Social Change.
