Playwright information

Melisa is a New-York-based playwright and lyricist, a member of New Dramatists, a NYFA Fellow in Playwriting/Screenwriting, and a MacDowell Colony Fellow. She is the author of the plays Yellow Card Red Card, Back of the House, Control, Best Life, and Familium Vulgare. Yellow Card Red Card ran last summer (2017) at the New Ohio Theatre in New York City as part of the Ice Factory Festival. She is currently working on: the book and lyrics for a musical called MARY about Mary Kay Letourneau, a play about gun control, a play about global human trafficking, a song cycle about a woman whose partner is in the military and is stationed in a volatile foreign country, and a series of site-specific plays that happen inside a large self storage unit. She was a recipient of the Theater Masters Visionary Playwright Award, and a member of the 2010-2012 Women's Project Lab. She has been a Leah Ryan Prize finalist, a Jerome New York Fellowship finalist, a Princess Grace Award finalist, and a Weissberger Award nominee. She has also been an artist in residence at Byrdcliffe and the Millay Colony, and has received grants for her work from the Puffin Foundation and Assets for Artists. She has presented at the 2010 Great Plains Theatre Conference, 2012 Women Playwrights International Conference, and 2014 National Asian American Theater Conference and Festival. She’s an associate artist with the 52nd Street Project, and has taught playwriting there, as well as at Columbia University and at the Eugene O' Neill Theater Center. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University, a BA in English from UCLA, and a Culinary Diploma from the French Culinary Institute.
