PROFILE: CHARLES LAFITTE FOUNDATION

Named for a black Labrador retriever, successful entrepreneurs and owners of Charles, Jeffrey and Suzanne Citron, established the Foundation in 1999 to help people help themselves and the others around them lead healthy, satisfying, and enriched lives.

The Foundation supports the following four causes:

# Children’s Advocacy

Improving the lives of children is central to the Foundation’s purpose. Grants awarded in this category seek to help children reach their fullest potential, defined as sufficient education, healthcare, shelter, and care. The Foundation sponsors programs that mitigate the hardship that confronts and impedes too many children. Topics of interest include child abuse, adequate foster housing, literacy, and hunger.

# Education

Here, the Foundation helps individuals gain access to schools (from preschool to college) by issuing grants and taking an active role in exploring new approaches to education. It supports programs that aid students with learning disabilities; target at-risk populations and integrate all learners; provide equal access; offer quality programming using innovative methods; apply data-driven approaches; and educate the whole child.

# Medical Research and Initiatives

The Foundation supports and encourages health research and education, leading to better healthcare, disease prevention, and healthier lives. The Foundation looks for efforts that stress quality of life, including disease prevention, and often focuses on specific groups with serious and neglected problems. Of particular interest are medical initiatives such as long-term patient housing and palliative care.

# The Arts

In this category, the Foundation believes that exposure to the arts is vital to fostering and sustaining healthy communities. Goals for arts funding include: cultivating new talent; supporting established artists; providing educational programs that encourage children’s creativity; furthering equal access to the arts; and establishing therapeutic arts programs.

The Foundation accepts letters of inquiry throughout the year. It prefers to underwrite specific projects with distinct goals, and targets grants that will have notable impact and make a material difference. The Foundation looks for creativity, innovation, and initiative when awarding funds. Grantmaking should promote inclusiveness and diversity. The Foundation likes projects that remove barriers to full economic and/or social participation in society. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
